Congrats, #NCState15!

Students at commencement

Our alumni numbers swelled on May 9, when 950 NC State students earned their undergraduate or graduate degree in Humanities and Social Sciences. They join an illustrious group of more than 35,000 living alumni.

See where some of our very impressive graduates are headed next:

I have the distinct privilege to say this to each of our graduating classes:

On behalf of the faculty of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, where we invite students to appreciate—and to inquire—how their disciplines enhance meaning, extend social justice, and improve well-being, I present these candidates, who, when asked the question “What can you do with a degree in humanities or social sciences?” will answer, “Anything I want!”

I don’t expect all graduates from our college to pursue careers as historians, psychologists, sociologists or whatever specific degree they earned here. I do expect, however, that all our graduates will use what they  learned here at NC State to shape their careers, whether it is in commerce, business, government service, or education — and more importantly, to shape their roles as citizens, neighbors, friends, parents, or relatives. We also expect our graduates to use what they have learned not only to do well—but also to do good.

For many of our graduates, scholarships made all the difference. Tiffany Johnson, whose father passed away when she was 17, says her scholarships enabled her to graduate with two degrees in four years. “My scholarships helped me to have fewer worries and more time to become involved on campus in organizations intended to prepare me for my career path,” she says. She was awarded the Shelton Leadership/Kimberly Jessup Scholarship and the Robert J. Pleasants Scholarship.

“I’d like to tell donors that their generous gifts are changing the world, one student at a time,” says Chelsea Creech, who received the Dean’s Advisory Board Scholarship and the Long, Javidi, Prospects and PRSSA (Public Relations Society of America) Scholarship. “Thank you for making dreams become reality!”

Your support and investments are crucial to ensuring that we continue to make high impact experiences possible for our students. As we prepare for the new academic year, please consider making a gift to the college’s Enhancement Fund. With your help, we will continue to send graduates out into the world well-prepared to take on the challenges and adventures that lie ahead.
