Constitutional Structures, Limited Government, and Civic Virtue
NC State’s School of Public and International Affairs will welcome Robert P. George to campus as part of the Pope Lecture Series on February 20. George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and founder and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University.
George’s lecture, “Constitutional Structures, Limited Government, and Civic Virtue,” will be held on campus in the SAS Hall auditorium (Room 2203) at 7:30 pm on February 20. The lecture and the reception that follows in the atrium are free and open to the public.
George was elected in July 2013 as chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. He previously served on the President’s Council on Bioethics (2002-2009), and as a presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights (1993-1998). He has served on UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology.
He is author of Making Men Moral: Civil Liberties and Public Morality (1993), In Defense of Natural Law (1999), and The Clash of Orthodoxies (2001), among other works. His articles and review essays have appeared in the Harvard Law Review, the Yale Law Journal, the Columbia Law Review, the University of Chicago Law Review and elsewhere. He has written for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, National Review and other outlets. He is general editor of New Forum Books, a Princeton University Press series of interdisciplinary works in law, culture and politics.
A graduate of Swarthmore College and Harvard Law School, George also earned a master’s degree in theology from Harvard and a doctorate in philosophy of law from Oxford University.
Among his awards are the United States Presidential Citizens Medal, the Honorific Medal for the Defense of Human Rights of the Republic of Poland and the Bradley Prize for Intellectual and Civic Achievement.
The John W. Pope Lecture Series is hosted by North Carolina State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Poole College of Management to encourage dialogue on topics of political and economic interest. The lecture series is part of a program funded by a grant from the John W. Pope Foundation to support education and research in political science, public policy and economics in the two colleges at NC State.
“Quality interaction with undergraduate students is a key component of the series,” says Dr. Andy Taylor, professor of Political Science at NC State. “Dr. George will offer a public lecture, but will also meet with our students.”
