Tuyen Truong has never shied away from asking the tough questions. The recent NC State graduate's eagerness to confront and explore new ideas led to award-winning research her senior year and now, a career in the U.S. Army.

Where There's A Will ... Nontraditional Student Studies Abroad

Thomasina Williams is a nontraditional student who is willing to step outside the familiar. A social work major, wife and mother of two, she's the first member of her family to attend college. And this summer, she packed her bags and traveled to Italy, where she learned Italian and studied the history and culture of land far from home. She says she's a changed person, and glad for it. Opening the door for underrepresented students to study abroad

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is launching a pilot program aimed at encouraging underrepresented student groups to study abroad. Through information sessions and Travel Scholar grants, the college hopes to show students how study abroad can augment their education and expose any misconceptions that may be holding them back.

Students Recognized for Service, Leadership

NC State’s Alumni Association pays special attention to students who emerge as campus leaders, knowing the special traits these undergraduates hone here will serve them – and the wider world – once they graduate. Each year, the Alumni Association recognizes a few of the university’s seniors who are role models for leadership and service with the Mathews Medal. Two of the four 2015 recipients are Humanities and Social Sciences students: Austin Bath and Alex Parker.

Mehr Sher (senior, International Studies) is passionate about global issues. She pursues that passion through involvement with campus groups and through undergraduate research. She is focusing on a career in public policy and foreign affairs.
