Why did you choose CHASS?

I always knew I was interested in Criminology and CHASS has a strong program. I was interested in the law since my high school years, when I interned as a Student Trooper with the Highway Patrol.

What new doors has college opened for you?

I have become involved with so many people on campus, particularly in the Greek community. I have been exposed to a lot of diversity – people of different backgrounds working together on common projects.

Being in student organizations and making good friends has helped the campus seem small and comfortable. At the same time, even though I am a junior and have been here almost three years, I still have the opportunity to meet a lot of people I don’t know – my exposure to new people and ideas is ongoing.

I have also been able to volunteer a lot of my time, giving back to the community by working with organizations such as the Salvation Army, Triangle Family Services, Relay For Life, and Hilburn Drive Elementary School.

What has been your greatest challenge here at NC State?

In January 2007, my father passed away. It was, of course, a very difficult time for me and my family, but part of what helped me cope was continuing my studies full-time, working part-time, and staying active on campus. I remained dedicated to my academic success and campus involvement, even earning Dean’s List that semester.

Do you have any advice for incoming students?

Get involved! Also, do not be afraid to approach your professors. They are friendly and approachable. At first, you may feel intimidated, but it is a lot easier than you think.
