History Weekend 2017 to Spotlight Immigration

Explore immigration and global consequences during multiple events at NC State March 31 and April 1.

History Weekend 2017, sponsored by NC State’s Department of History and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, will examine how demographic and cultural shifts of international migration have shaped both the United States and other countries around the world. Events include:

• Friday, March 31, 7:30 p.m. — History Weekend 2017 featured historian Donna Gabaccia will screen Last Train Home, a documentary detailing the annual New Year’s holiday journey of a Chinese migrant couple from their grueling city jobs back to the family they left behind in their home village. A short question and answer session will follow the film.
• Saturday, April 1, 10 a.m. — Gabaccia will deliver her keynote address, “Where are the Nations of Immigrants? A Historian Talks to the 21st Century.” The talk will explore why the world’s long histories of migration have produced so few nations of immigrants. And in our mobile times, can the American nation of immigrants serve as a model for other countries? A book signing will follow.

Both events are free and open to the public, but registration is recommended to reserve your space.

Gabaccia is a professor of history at the University of Toronto and past director of the Immigration History Research Center at the University of Minnesota. She is the author of 14 books and dozens of articles on immigrant class, gender and food studies in the United States, on Italian migration around the world, and on migration in world history. Her 2015 book Gender and International Migration, co-authored with sociologist and demographer Katharine Donato, was awarded an Honourable Mention from the American Sociological Association’s Znaniecki Prize.
