Chris Mayhorn to Head NC State’s Department of Psychology

Dr. Christopher B. Mayhorn has been named head of the Department of Psychology at NC State, effective July 1, 2017. He will take over from Adam Meade, who is returning to the faculty.

“I know the faculty and staff join me in thanking Adam for his outstanding service over the past year,” said Jeff Braden, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “And I am confident in Chris’ abilities to lead the department forward.”

His current research interests include everyday memory, decision-making, human-computer interaction, safety and risk communication. He has received research funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency and from such industry organizations as the Drug Information Association. Mayhorn has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications to his credit. He is a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Association.

Mayhorn holds a B.A. from The Citadel (1992), and an M.S. (1995), and a Ph.D. (1999) from the University of Georgia. He also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was selected in 2014 as a university faculty scholar at NC State.

Psychology courses were first offered at NC State in 1915. The department was established in 1927, and became part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2001.
