‘Extreme Vetting’ of Muslims Occurred Before Trump

Five months before President Trump came to office vowing “extreme vetting” for immigrants, the Obama administration added social media checks to a program that scrutinizes persons from majority-Muslim nations, newly obtained internal documents show.

Research led by NC State psychologist Sarah Desmarais doesn’t find good evidence that a Muslim faith or a certain set of beliefs increases someone’s likelihood of being radicalized. Desmarais was lead author of a Sept. 14 study co-funded by the National Security Agency and NC State that found there is almost no research on what distinguishes potential terrorists.
