NC State Religious Scholar Casts Light on Soka Gakkai

Soka Gakkai, a lay Buddhist organization, is said to be the largest active religion in Japan, with some 8.27 million members. Komeito, a Japanese political party backed by the group, is the junior coalition partner of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party. NC State Religious Studies professor Levi McLaughlin is the first non-member, non-Japanese researcher to spend years investigating both Soka Gakkai and Komeito. McLaughlin offers his insights in this profile.
