The Cold War’s Toxic Legacy

As a researcher in environmental and energy communication, NC State Professor of Communication William Kinsella has studied the legacies of nuclear weapons production. Kinsella served from 2000 to 2005 on the Hanford Advisory Board, an organization of stakeholders that provides recommendations and advice to the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, and the Washington Department of Ecology on selected major policy issues related to the cleanup of the Hanford site. In this essay, Kinsella offers lessons to remember from the cleanup of the site where massive amounts of plutonium were made and stored.
