Global Film Series Returns for Spring Semester

The Global Film Series at NC State is back for a second semester with four new international films. The series is a collaborative initiative to bring a variety of international and globally-focused films to campus. Interdisciplinary partners across campus select films from current releases, documentaries and classics highlighting the joys and struggles of the global community in which we live.

All films are free and open to the community and feature an academic introduction and opportunity for reflection at the film’s conclusion. The films showing this upcoming semester are:

The True Cost

January 15
6:30 p.m.
D.H. Hill Library Auditorium

• The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider: who really pays the price for our clothing?

Makala

February 12

• Winner of the Grand Prize Critics Week at the Cannes Film Festival, Makala tells the story of a young Congolese farmer’s dreams of a better future for his loved ones.
• Introduction by Dr. James Kiwanuka-Tondo, associate professor, coordinator of the public relations program in the Department of Communication, director of International Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Capernaum

• Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Capernaum (“Chaos”) tells the story of Zain, a gutsy streetwise Lebanese boy as he flees his negligent parents, survives through his wits on the streets, takes care of Ethiopian refugees, is jailed for a crime, and sues his parents for the “crime” of giving him life.

Bending the Arc

April 9

• Bending the Arc is a documentary about a team of young people—Paul Farmer, Jim Yong Kim, Ophelia Dahl—whose charitable medical work 30 years ago ignited a global health movement. Their goal was simple but daring: to make high-quality health care available to everyone, even in the world’s poorest countries.
• Introduction by Dr. Siddhartha Thakur, professor of molecular epidemiology and director of Global Health in the College of Veterinary Medicine, associate director of the Comparative Medicine Institute

The spring 2019 Global Film Series is presented by the Office of Global Engagement and NCSU Libraries with sponsorship from campus partners including the University Scholars Program, Program in International Studies, Global Engagement Institute, Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, Middle East Studies, and NC State Global Health.
