Outstanding Seniors Awarded NC State’s Highest Non-Academic Distinction
Three NC State graduating seniors received the 2018 Mathews Medal, the highest non-academic distinction awarded to NC State students. Two are students in Humanities and Social Sciences. The award, administered by the Alumni Association Student Ambassador Program, recognizes seniors who have made significant contributions to the university and created a lasting legacy.
Diversity Trailblazers Honored at Chancellor’s Creating Community Awards 2018
The annual Chancellor’s Creating Community Awards affirm NC State’s strong commitment to the principles and work of diversity, equity and inclusion. This year, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences was awarded three of the top awards: for outstanding college, outstanding faculty member and outstanding student.

Educator Dubroy to Discuss Xenophobia and Inclusivity
Tashni-Ann Dubroy, executive vice president and COO of Howard University, will deliver the 2018 Humanities and Social Sciences Diversity Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 22. Her talk is titled “There Is a Xenophobe Among Us: Diversity and Inclusivity on College Campuses.”
Recreating MLK’s “Dream” Speech in Rocky Mount
NC State English Professor Jason Miller and others are re-staging Martin Luther King's first "I Have a Dream" speech in Rocky Mount's Booker T. Washington Gymnasium at 6:00 pm on Feb. 23. The recreation will be filmed for use in Miller's documentary film entitled Origin of the Dream.
Student of the Month: Kathleen Miller
Meet Kathleen Miller, our student of the month. She's a senior with a major in political science and minor in criminology. Her experience includes being a chancellor's liaison, National Pan-Hellenic Council vice president, CHASS-MAS president, Dance Visions president and treasurer, and an NC State orientation leader. Miller plans to attend law school.

Forging a Path to Follow
Drawing from her own past, alumna Sharita Whitaker (B.A. Communication, summa cum laude 2007) works to open doors for minorities in North Carolina’s legal community. She also chairs the NC Bar Association’s Minorities in the Profession Committee, through which she's introducing African American, Latino, Asian and other minority students to the legal profession and showing them how they can make a difference.
