The English Department Speakers Series invites you to attend a poetry reading by NC State English Professor Jon Thompson.
Notebook of Last Things
“My time away from teaching was devoted to pushing ahead with my fourth, full-length collection of poems, the Notebook of Last Things. I was attracted to writing about urban experience, emphasizing both its ephemerality and the longer history behind particular moments, histories that are often invisible but palpable in other ways. My interest was in capturing the “feel” of the moment in city life at the same time as creating a context for understanding experiences that vanish upon contemplation. The form I hit upon for this set of interests was to write a serial poem made up of three numbered sequences. Each sequence is comprised of numbered 3-line poems (tercets) that provide a kind of imagist immediacy which, with the serial aspect of the collection, provide possibilities for creating certain kinds of thematic/tonal refrains. Poems from the manuscript have been published in Osiris, Molly Bloom, and Shearsman Magazine. The manuscript is currently under review for publication.” — Jon Thompson
