Dean for a Day Diaries 2012

CHASS Dean Jeff Braden traded places with junior International Relations and Criminology major Laura Wilkinson during the college's annual Dean for a Day event. Braden attended Wilkinson's classes and took over her work as editor of the Technician. Meanwhile, "Dean Wilkinson" attended Braden's meetings and even taught his PSY 200 class. Read their diaries--and don't miss the pictures on the CHASS FaceBook page.

Seeing the Message

Dean Braden welcomed President Obama to NC State. Most people who were lucky enough to snag a ticket for President Obama’s recent speech at Reynolds Coliseum heard NC State’s marching band play a brassy fanfare in honor of the Commander in Chief. They heard the tiny clicks and whirs of thousands of digital cameras attempting to capture…

The Dean’s Corner: Arab Spring

Arab Spring: What’s CHASS got to do with it? The spring of 2011 will be remembered for protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, for the departure of Tunisian President Ben Ali, and for events still in the making as I write this column. As the world watches the protests, civil war, and uprisings, scholars in the…

Dean Jeff Braden Reflects on A Father’s Ethical Legacy

I recently traveled to a senior center in Milwaukee to hear the Bruce M. Braden Memorial Ethics Lecture. The name of the lecture was no accident; it was named in memory of my father, who was a founding member of the center’s Ethics Committee. Although I always enjoy visiting the center (among other reasons, it’s…

Dean for a Day Diaries

On February 10, 2011, CHASS Dean Jeff Braden switched places with sophomore Communication major Sarah Hager. He took her classes (and her radio shift at WKNC). She spent the day in meetings with fellow deans, with college administrators and department heads, even with an Advisory Board member. Here are their reflections on the experience. Dean…

The Dean’s Corner: The Power of Poetry

I recently attended two events that seemed at first blush to be quite different: a poetry reading (delivered in Arabic and English) sponsored by CHASS, and a dinner of US Special Operations Command officers to which I’d been invited by Col. Ken Rataschack, Commander of NC State’s ROTC unit. The contrast between the two groups was…

It takes a village to install a chancellor

When W. Randolph Woodson was installed as North Carolina State University’s 14th chancellor on October 26, CHASS was integral every step of the way. The ceremony, with the theme of “Locally responsive. Globally engaged,” was held in NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum. Providing CHASS bookends to the ceremony, Professor of Music Mark Scearce composed the music for…
