Through Textbook, NC State Lecturer Engages Spanish Learners Across U.S.

While her office is in Withers Hall, Spanish lecturer Susan Navey-Davis helps engage learners far beyond NC State’s campus. As a co-author of the highly-circulated textbook Plazas: Lugar de encuentros (Cengage Learning), Navey-Davis has a hand in growing higher education Spanish across the nation. Now in its fifth edition, the book is used at more than 50 colleges and universities.

Fulbright Winner to Explore Passion for Inclusive Learning in Colombia

After double-majoring in psychology and Spanish languages and literatures, recent graduate QuiAnne' Holmes has developed a passion for promoting equity in the classroom. Holmes, who graduated in May, will explore her interests further when she starts a Fulbright teaching assistantship in Colombia later this year.

Class Project Leads to New Research on Spanish in North Carolina

For professor Jim Michnowicz and his students, what started as a class experiment is now producing intriguing research findings that will be published in a new book on language diversity. Their work, which provides further insight into the evolution of Spanish in North Carolina, also serves as a clear example of the kind of purposeful, community-based research that can be carried out by undergraduates.

Foreign Language Prof’s Poetry Spans 40 Creative Years

Tom Feeny started teaching language and literature courses in 1959 and has been teaching at NC State since 1970. However, he’s been writing poetry since he was a teenager. That early pastime became an avocation he’s pursued ever since, motivated by the pure satisfaction of the creative act.

Laila Knio (Psychology, French ’17) plans to become a physician. She's also committed to global concerns. So when she studied abroad, she filmed a documentary in war-torn Lebanon to highlight "extraordinary people who have helped others despite religious or ethnic differences."
