Preparing the Next Generation of Mental Health Workers

Too many young people are at risk for mental health and substance abuse issues. And not enough trained professionals are there to help them, especially in rural areas. With a $1.1M grant, NC State’s Department of Social Work is launching a new workforce program to recruit and train the next generation of mental health professionals who work with young adults.

Political science major Graham Dean calls his internship on Capitol Hill one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. Dean's internship was supported by the Latta Washington Internship Scholarship, created by alum Sandra Latta (Political Science '84).

Spechel Wooten is a senior with majors in anthropology and criminology, and a minor in forensic science. She has interned with the Wake County Public Defender's Office, NC State Bureau of Investigation, and NC State's CSLEPS. She has worked on campus for University Housing and University Conference Services. She intends to apply to law school after graduation in December 2014.

October Student of the Month

Kim Thanh Vu, a senior majoring in Social Work and minoring in Biology, envisions a career as an occupational therapist. She founded Crafts for a Cause, bringing together students who share a passion for crafting and philanthropy. She was a 2013-14 Resident Mentor, interned at the Alexander Family YMCA, and traveled to Guatemala for Spring 2014 Alternative Spring Break.

Internships help our students explore career options and acquire real-world experiences. In her internship with Stop Hunger Now, Selena Amatya--a senior majoring in International Studies and minoring in Nonprofit Studies--made connections between what she had learned in the classroom and helping a nonprofit expand its services to India.

September Student of the Month

Alex Hyler is a senior pre-dental student majoring in Spanish Languages and Literatures. She has interned and volunteered in several dental offices and clinics, including one in Bolivia. She studied abroad in Spain, is a Fall 2014 teaching assistant, and founded the NC State Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fundraiser in 2013-14.

Laken Geiger is a junior with a major in Communication and minor in Arts Entrepreneurship. She has had several media and arts-related internships, and spent Spring 2014 studying in Prague. She is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and Habitat for Humanity.

Kirsten Henning is a junior in Communication who has had three internships to date during her time in CHASS. "It’s been beneficial to intern for a number of different companies," she says. "It allows me to try new things and gives me the chance to find something that I really enjoy."

Danielle Beysolow is a senior majoring in psychology. Active in CSLEPS and Read to L.E.A.D,, she has studied abroad in France and participated in an alternative spring break trip in the Dominican Republic. She plans to attend a graduate program for school psychology.

Donors Help Top Students Reach Their Potential

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences continues to grow as a destination college for talented, top-ranked students from across our state and beyond. Merit scholarships play a critical part in attracting and retaining such students. This year, CHASS awarded more than 100 merit-based scholarships across all its disciplines. A number of scholarship students were able to thank their donors at the college's 2014 Scholarship Luncheon.
