Blair Kelley Named Assistant Dean

Dr. Blair L.M. Kelley has been named assistant dean for interdisciplinary studies and international programs at NC State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The CHASS Interdisciplinary Studies Program awards an array of cross-disciplinary undergraduate degrees. IDS major programs include Africana Studies, Arts Studies (including Film Studies), International Studies, Science Technology and Society (STS), Self-Design Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies

April Student of the Month

Danielle Beysolow is a senior majoring in psychology. Active in CSLEPS and Read to L.E.A.D,, she has studied abroad in France and participated in an alternative spring break trip in the Dominican Republic. She plans to attend a graduate program for school psychology.

Study Shows Innovative Program Helps Limit Domestic Violence

The statistics are horrifying. Nearly three in 10 women have been stalked or assaulted by their partner, and states reported investigating abuse cases involving 5.9 million children in 2010. Social workers and social work researchers are constantly searching for ways to address domestic violence, and new research from NC State shows that at least one recent program is making a difference.

What the Dog Knows

Cat Warren, an associate professor of journalism in the Department of English, teaches science writing, editing and reporting. In a completely different role, and working alongside the cadaver dog she trained, Warren also helps law enforcement officials search for missing and presumed-dead people. In her new book, What the Dog Knows (Touchstone Books, 2013), Warren has combined science, history and memoir to explore the world of working dogs that sniff out bodies, bombs and drugs, even unmarked graves of Civil War soldiers.

Nonprofit, International Studies Lead Grad to Address Global Women’s Health

CHASS alumna Tracy DiTucci (International Studies with a minor in Nonprofit Studies, '11) travels the world working with the nonprofit women's health organization, Ipas. Her studies provided her “with a framework for better understanding the unique role that nonprofits play in society and the different challenges and opportunities they face."

No Worries for New Teachers

New teachers worry whether their students will like them, question their credibility, or worse: learn nothing worthwhile. Professor of Communication Deanna Dannels has coached hundreds of new teachers and hears these very concerns and the questions that arise from them. In her new book, Eight Essential Questions Teachers Ask: A Guidebook for Communicating with Students (Oxford University Press, 2014), Dannels shows teachers how to overcome their concerns by understanding the research, learning from mentors, and facing their fears.

Speaking Out for Women — at the United Nations

Becca Bishopric ‘11 and senior Anuja Acharya (Political Science and English) were fellows during the past year with WomenNC.org. They each spent time researching a topic dealing with rural women in North Carolina and wrote a paper on those findings. This week, they're in New York presenting their research on women's issues to the United Nations. The pair will represent WomenNC.org, a nonprofit organization that formed out of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. They will spend a few days attending U.N. workshops and seminars covering issues affecting rural women around the world. On Thursday, they will present their findings. Acharya is a CHASS Dean's Scholarship recipient.
